Windrush Generations Commemorative 50 Pence Coin

On invitation by the Royal Mint to design a coin in celebration of 75 years of Windrush Generations, I present two figures that are at once specific to a generation of pioneers – workers from Commonwealth nations, who responded to Britain’s call for help in its rebuilding post-war – while also representing their predecessors, and their descendants.
This work is informed by experiences of migration. I understand the complex motivations that prompted so many young men and women to take the life-changing decision to come and make Britain their home.
In these two figures, with the Union Jack behind them, I put forward for reflection issues around belonging, around ownership, questions around our historical and present relationship with everything that flag represents. And, most importantly, what it must represent for our children – UK born, and their children, and so on.
It was important, I think, to honour our multiplicity of difference while recognising our similar stories and histories. A country’s flag – this flag – is hugely significant to many.
I am very pleased The Royal Mint selected this image proposal for this celebratory coin which honours our parents and their legacy and celebrates our presence, achievements, and contributions that continue to enrich our society.
